"Trout and Ladys"
Fishing along the Indian River and St. Lucie
Inlet last week provided several action packed trips along with a few that
left me wondering who shut off the "bite" switch. The ladyfish
action in the Sailfish Flats has been hot, especially on the windy days
when lots of ground can be covered. The crossroads and inlet have been hot
& cold all week. One trip yielded 10 species and the next trip only 3.
Some nice pompano over 5 lbs. remain in the flats and crossroads. Bottom
fishing too has been hot one day and cold the next.
Further north, trout action remains good in 3-4 feet after 8:00 am.
Baitfish are showing along the east side near Herman's Bay. The perimeter
wall around Nettle's Island continues to hold plenty of mangrove snapper
and small snook. One trip last week while fishing the west side near
Walton Road with Bill Kresge and John Bradford, we ran into trout to
18" and several jacks in the 10 lb range.
Look for big blues to be everywhere the next few weeks. We've hooked
into them just about everywhere. I'm glad the Habley family enjoyed
themselves hooking into over 40 assorted species of fish on Friday
afternoon.
Easter Sunday I ran a scouting trip north for a few hours and saw some
good-sized jacks crashing bait near Herman's Bay. The jacks looked like
torpedoes zooming past the boat. I was able to get a sparkling chug lure
into them before they took off, with one hit, but no hook-up. These jacks
were not the monsters that ran the beaches a few weeks ago but good rod
benders in the 10-15 lb class. As quickly as the action started, it
stopped, and cruising several hundred yards north and south of the bait
crash showed no more activity. I guess they were on a scouting trip too.
Sunday afternoon brought in some stiff southeast wind and since I was well
north of Walton Road I was lucky enough to get into the channel behind a
35' motor yacht. I want to thank the Captain of the Pachis for letting me
fall in behind and providing relief from the pounding we would have
otherwise taken on the ride back to Anchors Aweigh. People are always
quick to criticize and slow to say thank you, but the captain of that boat
showed the ultimate in boating courtesy.
Well, I'm going to cut this report short this week with doubles booked
again for the next several days. Safe boating everyone.
Capt. Bob
