Night Fishing Tours

Barracuda

Description:.Greenish or grayish above with silvery sides, marker by numerous black spots.

Facts:  

Florida Record: 67 pounds

POMPANO

Description: Greenish gray on back with silver sides. Gold on throat, pelvic and anal fins. Deep flattened body with small mouth.

Facts: Found near sandy beaches, oyster bars and over grass beds. Usually less than 3 pounds. Spawns offshore between March and September. Pompano feed on mollusks, crustaceans and especially sand fleas.

Florida record: 8 pounds, 1 ounce.

CREVELLE JACK

Description: Bluish-green to greenish gold back with silvery or yellowish belly. Prominent black spots on gill cover and at the base of each pectoral fin.

Facts: Found inshore and offshore, usually in the 3 to 5 pound range. Jacks’ feed on small fish. They spawn offshore between March and September.

Florida Record: 51 pounds.

Description: Similar to a Redfish in shape. Drum have black vertical stripes on darkly white sides

Goliath Grouper

Description: Largest of the groupers having dark brown bars against a light brown or gray background. Round tail.

Facts:.

Florida Record:.680 pounds

Grouper

Description: Gag groupers are gray or light brown with wavy markings on the side that generally do not form boxes or circles. Edges of fins are blueish. 

Facts: Can reach 50 lbs on deep offshore wrecks, inshore under 10 lbs is common. 

Florida Record:. 71lbs, 3 ounces

TARPON

Description: Back is dark blue to green or greenish black with bright silver on both sides and huge scales with large mouth that points upward.

Facts: Primarily inshore fish which spawn between May and September. Tarpon can breath air at the surface and feed mainly on fish and large crustaceans. Average size 40 pounds.

Florida record: 243 pounds.

SHEEPSHEAD

Description: Basic silvery in color with 5 or 6 vertical black bands on both sides, prominent teeth, strong and very sharp spines on dorsal and anal fins.

Facts: Found near oyster bars, seawalls and pilings. Sheepshead feed on crustaceans such as fiddler crabs and barnacles. They run in the 1 to 5 pound range.

Florida record: 15 pounds, 20 ounces.

TRIPLETAIL

Description: They are deep-bodied perch like fish that at first glance appear to have 3 tails; hence the name: Tripletail. Their shades of color are dark brown to black.

Facts: They are found near channel markers sometimes floating on their sides. They feed on shrimp and crabs but have been known to hit dead bait, jigs and rubber bait.

Florida record: 41 pounds.

BLUE FISH

Description: Blue or Greenish blue on back with silvery sides and large mouth with prominent very sharp teeth.

Facts: Strong migration to Florida’s East Coast in winter. Bluefish travel in large schools and average in size from 3 to 5 pounds.

Florida record: 22 pounds, 3 ounces.

SNOOK

Description: Snook have a distinct black lateral line, high divided dorsal fin and sloping forehead and large protruding lower jaw.

Facts: Snook run from central Florida south usually inshore in coastal and brackish waters. They primarily stay along seawalls, bridges and mangrove shore lines. Snook spawn in summer along the shore and in inlets. They feed on fish and large crustaceans. Most catches run 5 to 8 pounds but fish over 25 pounds are common along the Treasure Coast.

Florida Record: 44 pounds, 3 ounces.

SPOTTED SEA TROUT

Description: Dark gray or green above with silvery and white below. They have numerous round black spots on their back with one or two canine teeth usually present at the top of upper jaw.

Facts: Found inshore and near shore over grass and sandy mud. Average size is around 2 pounds.

Florida Record: 15 pounds, 6 ounces.

RED DRUM (Red Fish)

Description: Copper brown body with one to many spots at base of tail; large scales.

Facts: Red fish are an inshore species for their first 4 years; they then migrate near shore. Spawning occurs from August to November in near shore waters. They may live 20 years or more.

Florida Record: 51 pounds, 8 ounces.

FLOUNDER

Description: Brown in color with numerous spots, 2 eyes on left side of head. Flounder have very strong canine-like teeth.

Facts: Found inshore on sandy or mud bottom. Common to 4 pounds.

Florida record: N/A

MANGROVE SNAPPER

Description: Dark brown or gray with reddish or orange spots in rows along both sides. Snapper have two canine teeth at the front of upper jaw.

Facts: Juveniles stay inshore in grassy beds and mangroves. Adults move offshore over sandy areas near reefs.

Florida record: 16 pounds, 8 ounces.

Spanish Mackerel

Description: Dark above with silvery sides. Many spots both yellow & brown

Facts: .Common to 3 áÐ&V‹GET http://www.webshots.com/mimgs/ads/a"Arial" size="2">Florida record: .12 pounds.

PERMIT

Description: Gray in color, dark blue above and silvery sides with a golden tint around the breast area.

Facts: Permit are found inshore on grassy flats and in canals feeding on bottom dwelling crabs, shrimp, clams and small fish. Common to 4 pounds.

Florida record: 51 pounds, 8 ounces.

Ladyfish

Description: A slender, silvery fish with deeply forked tail and large scoop-shaped lower jaw.

Facts:  Usually 1-2 pounds, scrappy fighters on light tackle and great sportfish with leaping ability. Locally nicknamed poorman's tarpon.

Florida record: 4 pounds 7 ounces.
